PHILOSOPHY

The Trolley Problem is a classical ethical dilemma designed to ask students to consider the issue of moral or ethical culpability. It is often dismissed as being overly reductionist, but it brings up the interesting question of how a person determines proper action. Below are a few links related to the Trolley Problem. Watch the videos, and in your discussion board posts, answer the following questions:

1) Is the Trolley Problem the same as the Organ Donor Problem?

2) How do you solve the Trolley Problem?

3) Based on your answer, which ethical school that you’ve read about best describes your thinking?

In your response posts (you are required to do at least a minimum of two), state whether you agree or disagree with your classmates’ assessments of the Trolley Problem, the ethically right thing to do, or the ethical school they are coming from.

The initial post must be a minimum of 250 words and demonstrate the student’s original thought based upon Holmes’ text and course lecture. Students will then respond to at least 2 other student’s posts. These responses should be no less than 100 words, and should not merely reflect and compliment the student’s post, but rather engage the topics brought up in the post and further the conversation.

SOCW 6111 Week 4 Discussion 2: Developmental Stages

Understanding an adolescent’s behavior can be at times elusive and even frustrating. Due to the multiple aspects of the developmental tasks during these years, it can be at times quite challenging to clearly define the issue(s) at hand. Assessment during this stage will include an evaluation of whether an adolescent’s actions are indicative of unhealthy behavior or merely representative of being an adolescent. A comprehensive assessment that includes an evaluation of the client’s developmental stage is a priority when working with this age group.

For this Discussion, choose the opposite case from Discussion 1 and use Erikson’s developmental theory.

Post an assessment of whether the client – The Bradley Family – is mastering the stage of identity.

Identify the areas that should be addressed in an intervention based on his or her developmental stage.

Describe how you might address those areas.

Support your posts with specific references to this week’s resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

  10. If the study was experimental, was the intervention performed consistently? Why or why not?
  11. Were the conclusions of the study supported by the results?  Why or why not?

Social Problems

Gender has been a topic of much controversy, contentment and social divide in our society, particularly in the last decade. A part of that discourse is the fact that, societies that uphold gender roles and gender in general (which is all societies- some more than others), are more likely to experience patterns of gender stratification. This assignment will explore that notion, concentrating on (1) Gender Stratification in America or (2) Gender Stratification around the world, focusing on India. Select one of the following question options and respond to both parts of the question that you have selected.

Option # 1: Gender in the Workplace- The United States

  1. Define gender stratification and provide 2 examples of gender stratification (in the US and or around the world)
  2. Define the “The Gender Pay Gap” that exists in the United States and discuss the reasons why it exists (Site at least 3 specific reasons like the testosterone bonus.
  3. What is femicide and how does it relate to culture and gender?

Use the discussion notes on D2L, and conduct your own research to complete this assignment.

This assignment should be typed using a 12 point font, double spaced and should be no more than 3-4 pages and uploaded to the HW tab on D2L. Citations should be used to avoid plagiarism.

Human resource

According to Creswell (2009), quantitative research is a “means for testing objective theories by examining the relationship among variables that can be measured and analyzed using statistical procedures.” Qualitative research, Creswell posits, is a “means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to social or human problems.”

Consider the phenomenon of pain. Ethics committees and institutional review boards do not allow researchers to inflict equal doses of pain on subjects to examine their physiological response. In quantitative research, pain can be measured physiologically by blood pressure, changes in blood chemistry, muscle contractions, and pain scales (which are still subjective, but at least quantifiable). Researchers using a qualitative perspective may ask participants about their experience of being in physical pain, whether being in pain has changed them in any way, or what they have learned from experiencing physical pain.

For this Assignment, consider differences in how you might frame a research question in order to explore it using quantitative or qualitative research methods.

Submit a 2-page paper that highlights one of the research questions you shared in your Discussion post. Design a quantitative research question related to this problem and a qualitative research question related to the same problem. Please use the resources to support your answer.

Assignment: Why did you decide to go to Strayer University at this point in your life?

Notes:

Introduction & Conclusion
Due Week 5 and worth 50 points

Remember in this course, you will develop one essay. The subject of your essay for this course is “Changing Our Lives.” In your essay, you will present and then explain THREE reasons why you decided to go to college at this time in your life.

In the first two (2) assignments you chose your topic, created a thesis statement, and prepared an outline. Now you will create the introduction and the conclusion paragraphs for your essay.

You will create and submit your assignment by using ecree. Your work will be saved automatically. You’ll see some feedback on the right-hand side of the screen – try to read it and watch the help videos as you go, but ignore feedback about your body paragraphs for now. When you’re ready, you can turn in your assignment by clicking “Submit” at the bottom of the page.

Write an introduction and conclusion in which you:

Develop an introduction paragraph that attracts the reader’s attention and introduces the topic of returning to school.
As the final sentence in the introduction, include the revised version of the thesis statement you wrote in Assignment 2, making sure to use instructor feedback in revision.
Develop a conclusion paragraph to the essay, making sure the conclusion signals an end to the essay and provides a closing thought. Be sure to restate your thesis within this closing paragraph.
Meet the assignment word count of five to seven (5-7) sentences for each paragraph.
Minimize mechanical, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and stylistic errors.
