Consider the possible conflicts between legally doing business and selling fast-food, given the increasing evidence of how it is a significant contributing factor in public health, obesity, and diabetes facing many Americans. Now, based on what you’ve learned in this module, answer the following:

What ethical obligations, if any, do fast food companies have to consumers?

B) Does government (federal, state, or local) have a right or a responsibility to get involved in this conflict? If so, what and to what limit? If not, why not?

Provide sound reasoning for your stance and back it up with references, if possible. Your logic should be factual, not emotional. Then, reply to two or more of your classmates’ postings (three additional postings are needed for an “Exemplary” grade). See the Discussion Rubric for additional information and grading criteria.

Classmate # 1 Kelly

This week is our final week of BIO 101. We made it through! It has been a hard eight weeks throughout this class. I wish everyone the best of luck on your journey.

While working on the research for the final project, I was most surprised to find out there was such a thing as “designer babies”. I’ve always thought it was a theory or something you see in movies. I was surprised to find out that it is something scientists are working on as we speak.

It was very interesting to research and learn about the process of genetically modifying genes. I did not know or realize that it was possible to remove specific singular gene strains. I am amazed that the level of technology used in the medical field is so high. It is amazing to know that researchers and scientists are working on this process in attempt to remove hereditary diseases that are life threatening to the baby.

Classmate # 2 Quanita

I was really interested in how genetic editing has thrown science into a tailspin. You would think that there would be hardcore rules and ethics involved in experimentation over the years, and that scientists and researchers would adhere to them without fail. But as I learned, while there are practical applications for its use (the treatment and curing of degenerative disorders), there are also unintended drawbacks in using a fairly new technology that may have unintended results or consequences.

This class has been very interesting and I learned a lot. I hope everyone else did, too, and I wish you all much success going forward!

For instance, the twins created using CRISPR was to create immunity to HIV via gene editing; however, it has impacted their cognitive functions, which has yet to be seen if the results are positive or negative (Regalado, 2019). Science is still discovering what genes do and how editing will impact them and others, so it is irresponsible to take this technology into practice without exploring all the angles. Additionally, because this modification was done on a germline level, it means should the twins be allowed to procreate, their altered genes would be passed down to their offspring and future descendants rather than ending with them (somatic) (“Designer DNA,” 2018).

This class was interesting and I learned a lot. I hope everyone enjoyed it, as well, and I wish you all much success!

Essay 2: The Food Waste Crisis

An estimated of 1.3 billion tons of food, about 30 percent of global production, is lost or wasted

annually while 800 billion go hungry. Much of this waste happens in the United States.

According to Oliver Milman, a writer for

The Guardian

, “Americans waste about a pound

of food per person each day […]. About 150,000 tons of food is tossed out in US households each

day, equivalent to about a third of the daily calories that each American consumes.”

The numbers are shocking. But there is something we can all do about it. In this classroom, we

find young students who will soon inherit this crisis, we find parents who do the grocery

shopping and cooking in the household, and we find some who work at restaurants or grocery

stores. In the end, we are all consumers of food, and it is my hope that this unit will get us to

consider our consumption, and more specifically what we don’t end up consuming, more closely

and carefully.

With this assignment, we will address the food waste epidemic by analyzing its core causes and

effects while considering ways that we can advocate for solutions and change.

Reading and Writing Skills

Over the course of this assignment, we will continue to work on developing key academic

reading and writing skills, which you will use throughout your career as a student and which

constitute the basis of most scholarly writing. We will be annotating and close reading texts,

dissecting parts of argument, evaluating different types of sources, taking into consideration the

purpose and audience of our writing, and finally creating our own arguments by developing

strong thesis statements, incorporating sources into our argument and thoroughly explaining

and analyzing evidence to convince our intended audience of our argument and to hopefully

make a change.

Focusing Questions

Now that you briefly understand what we are doing with this assignment and why we are doing

it, I will now introduce our guiding questions. Through our reading and writing over the next

few weeks, we will be considering and discussing the following:

What are the primary causes

and/or immediate effects of the current food waste crisis? What are some possible solutions to

this crisis?

Assignment Overview

The section below outlines the specific requirement of this assignment.

The purpose of this assignment is to:

1. Read and respond to a college-level text.

2. Compose college-level writing.

3. Evaluate sources for credibility and appropriateness in respect to their audience and

Complete the writing process—synthesizing information, brainstorming, outlining and

writing drafts.

5. Respond to a topic with an original argument.

This assignment will help students meet the following Student Learning Objectives, as stated on

the course syllabus:

Compose an essay, between 100-1200 words in length, which presents an argument about the

causes and effects of food waste in the United States and presents possible solutions to the crisis.

More Specifically:

Identify a narrowed topic and develop an argument about that topic

Be well organized and demonstrate coherence. Your paper should include:

An introduction section that states your topic and thesis;

A discussion section which develops your argument with PIE paragraphs: clear

point, at least two examples from the articles and analysis

A conclusion section which wraps up the paper

1. Use active/critical-reading strategies to produce accurate, concise

summaries of college level/academic texts.

2. Synthesize researched material from multiple texts to create and support

an argument in response to a prompt. Draw direct evidence from texts in

support of claims and analyze how that evidence supports the claim.

3. Utilize the various phases in the writing process—prewriting, writing

revision, and proofreading—to produce clear, articulate, well-supported,

well-organized essays.

4. Avoid plagiarism by properly citing quoted, summarized, and

paraphrased material using MLA format.

NOTE: Since you are citing the articles and videos, and possibly your

own sources, don’t forget your Works Cited page.

Guidelines for Qualitative Interview: Exploring Your Domain of Interest (60 points) Arrange an interview with someone whose work interests you regarding the domain(s) for your master’s studies and research – a colleague, a faculty member, a professional acquaintance. Domains can follow those of your vocational and research interests – for example, child welfare, substance abuse, mental health, etc. Plan for a one-hour, intensive, exploratory interview, not to last less than 45 minutes nor more than an hour and a half. Arrange to audio record this interview and be sure that you have the person’s consent for audio recording. Draft a list of four to six exploratory questions to get at understanding of the person’s research and/or professional experience in a domain that interests you – you can decide how to ask the questions and the person whom you interview can interpret your question in a variety of ways. Note: One question that all students must include in the interview is: How do you use research and evaluation in your social work practice? You may or may not end up asking all of your questions, and the person’s responses may lead you to ask different questions. Use the time to develop the interview as a special kind of conversation, listening and seeking to understand the person’s experience, perspective and reflections on the domain. Audio record this interview. (Do not video record the interview.) You will also want to jot down key terms and phrases during the interview, to note highlights and to note key words to guide you in conducting the interview. Immediately upon finishing the interview, make some notes to yourself about key words, phrases, and passages – these notes will help you focus in listening back to the interview and in summarizing it. Listen back to the interview all the way through. Do not transcribe the interview verbatim (unless you have reasons beyond the assignment to do so!) – to transcribe an hour long interview can take 4-6 hours. Rather, create a “log” of topics to organize your notes from the interview — identifying the flow of questions and answers but also indicating topics as they come up, highlighting important comments, key phrases and passages. You will want to transcribe selected statements as exact quotes (verbatim) – direct quotes for 3 to 5 points you feel are most important will be enough, so that you don’t spend too long on the process of listening back and annotating the recorded interview. The summary of the interview should include: Your name; a pseudonym (not the real name) for the respondent and his/her occupation; a brief reference to the setting in which the interview was conducted, your pre-prepared questions, and a description of the interview, its key points, 3-5 direct quotes, and what you learned about the domain. Conclude with your reflections on the interview. Areas to focus your reflection are the following: (a) the use of audio recording; (b) the interactions and dynamics between yourself and the person interviewed; (c) how you experienced audio recording the interview; (d) your analysis of the key points that arose in the interview; (e) how having the interview audio recorded affected your analysis of the interview; and (f) any comments about what the interview suggests for your on-going research or vocational plans, and any other observations you have. The description should be typed, 2-4 pages

Look through the Polish album covers in this Flickr set (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

  1. First, find one that you like. Ignore the other visual elements (type, photographs, etc.) and just focus on the color. Save your poster to your desktop.
  2. Next, Visit this Sherwin Williams paint color site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Find paint color swatches that match the colors in your album. Screenshot them and record the color name/numbers.
Pro-tip: hold the swatches up to what you’re trying to match and squint your eyes. If they blur together, you’ve found a match.
  3. Next, write a brief one-paragraph description of the colors you’ve found.
Use as many terms from the lectures as possible (“warm/cold”, “saturation”, etc.).
  4. Then, find a contemporary artist’s song that you think could use these same colors in a new album you could design. Justify this decision in one additional paragraph. Be sure to map the feelings of the colors to the feelings of the song.
  5. Finally, add the paragraphs in the discussion board.
    1. Include the picture files of the album cover and the paint swatches

In the end, you’ll have:

  • One paragraph identifying the feel of the colors.
  • One paragraph identifying the artist and album/song, the feel of that album/song, and how the colors map to the feelings of the song.
  • Your polish album cover and swatch images

Remember, just as we justified our solutions by the research, we justify all design decisions based on the underlying content that we’re trying to reinforce. So, whatever feelings the contemporary artist evokes should be reflected in the color choices you make.
