Question 1:

In this course, the 12 systems of the human body (skeletal, muscular, integumentary, nervous, special senses, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic/immune, gastrointestinal, renal, and reproductive) are explored. For this discussion, you will choose and locate two body systems. Then, for each chosen body system you will:

  • Briefly describe its major physiological functions.
  • Identify the associated organs.
  • Explain the relationship between normal system function and dysfunction.
  • Provide one example of how dysfunction can lead to disease.
  • Examine the interdependence of physiological systems in both health and disease.
  • Briefly describe the importance of homeostasis as it relates to our health.

Use medical terminology and two scholarly sources to support your research and findings (one may be your course text). All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.

Briefly describe its major physiological functions.( Cardiovascular)

The Cardiovascular system has four main functions. It pumps materials through the body, this facilitates the delivery of vital materials to the cells of the body, and finally it is designed to transport blood to various parts of the body (Colbert, Ankney, & Lee, 2016).

Identify the associated organs.

The cardiovascular system is comprised of the heart, blood and blood vessels(arteries, arterioles, and capillaries(Barclay,2018a)

Explain the relationship between normal system function and dysfunction

Normal function of the heart would be pumping and the blood flowing via the network of blood vessels mentioned earlier. Transporting oxygen and other vital material throughout the body. Dysfunction may occur when a blockage occurs in the system, disrupting the normal flow of blood and oxygen.

Provide one example of how dysfunction can lead to disease.

An ischemic stroke will occur when blood flow is blocked to a section of the brain and injury to the brain tissue will occur.

Briefly describe the importance of homeostasis as it relates to our health.

Homeostasis is important to the cardiovascular system because it is a state that allows the maintenance and regulation of the stability and constancy needed to function properly (Stöppler, 2018). This is vital to our health because maintaining constant blood pressure would be an example of homeostasis

Briefly describe its major physiological functions. (Respiratory)

The respiratory system provides oxygen to the body’s cells while removing carbon dioxide, a waste product that can be lethal if allowed to accumulate (Barclay,2018b).

Identify the associated organs.

The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, lungs, and trachea (Barclay, 2018b).

Explain the relationship between normal system function and dysfunction

Pulmonary ventilation is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange. This is under normal function. Under dysfunction the system is unable to properly ventilate or respirate resulting in a decreased amount of oxygen being able to enter the body with each breath.

Provide one example of how dysfunction can lead to disease.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops during sleep. Most commonly caused by tissue at the back of the throat blocking the airway. This is known as obstructive sleep apnea. In the long-term sleep apnea left unchecked can lead to bigger health issues such as high blood pressure, weight gain, and headaches.

Briefly describe the importance of homeostasis as it relates to our health.

The homeostatic control of the respiratory system is called eupnea. This state is maintained until the body’s demand for oxygen and production of carbon dioxide rises due to greater exertion(Barclay,2018b).

The first system I have chosen is the digestive or gastrointestinal system. The digestive system major function is to break down raw materials or food, both mechanically and chemically, into usable substances (Colbert, Ankeny & Lee, 2013). There are many associated organs with the digestive system: mouth, pharynx(throat), esophagus, stomach, intestines, accessory organs and anal canal. The main function of the digestive system is to use enzymes to break down food and to move it on to the next area. The dysfunction can cause Crohn’s disease. This is when the lining of the intestine develops ulcers (Johnstone, Hendry, Farley & McLafferty, 2014) The interdependence system with the gastrointestinal system is the cardiovascular system, as the cardiovascular system transports the nutrients from the gastrointestinal system to the body.

The second system is the cardiovascular system. The cardiovascular system is the main transportation system to each cell of our body (Colbert, Ankeny & Lee, 2013). The main organs associated with this system is the heart, veins, arteries, capillaries or small blood vessels and blood. One dysfunction is when blood is cut off to the heart which then causes a heart attack.

What is the importance of homeostasis as it relates to our health? Homeostasis is the balance to within our body that keeps all organs functioning. So, if something is off and not functioning properly for example your cardiovascular system it could cause major problems, even death.

Question 2:

The human body is simply amazing! However, certain factors or actions can positively or negatively impact our health and well-being. Think of how genetics, diet, exercise, tobacco, alcohol, sleep, sanitation and safety measures, condoms, and stress influence our overall health.

Based on your knowledge and experience, evaluate two factors or actions that promote our health status as well as two factors or actions that can cause dysfunction and result in disease.

Identify two diseases that could result from factors or actions you examined above. Which body system(s) will be impacted by the diseases?

Briefly analyze two effects human activity and lifestyle habits have on our environment (air quality, food and water quality, waste, recycling, etcetera).

Use medical terminology and two scholarly sources to support your research and findings (one may be your course text). All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.

Based on your knowledge and experience, evaluate two factors or actions that promote our health status as well as two factors or actions that can cause dysfunction and result in disease.

Physical and emotional wellness are some aspects that affect our overall wellbeing. Less active and less fit people have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, physical activity lowers you risk for high blood pressure and stroke for adults. Studies show that physically active people are less likely to develop coronary heart disease than those who are inactive. Some factors such as age, gender, and the environment place us at higher risk for disease. Lack of physical activity can have negative effects on the nervous system which can cause low self-esteem, which can then lead to anxiety and depression.

Identify two diseases that could result from factors or actions you examined above. Which body system(s) will be impacted by the diseases?

Unhealthy behaviors can lead to diseases such as stroke and depression. These diseases have a negative impact on the cardiovascular and nervous systems. The cardiovascular system is the main transportation system to each cell of our body. Through this system, water, oxygen, and a variety of nutrients and other substances necessary for life are transported to the cells, and waste products are transported away from the cells (Colbert, Ankney, & Lee, 2013). The nervous system is the rapid messenger system of the body that both receives and sends messages for activities to occur. The messages conducted by the nervous system are stimulated by the body’s internal and external environments (Colbert, Ankney, & Lee, 2013).

Briefly analyze two effects human activity and lifestyle habits have on our environment (air quality, food and water quality, waste, recycling, etcetera).

Overpopulation has grown into an epidemic. The effects of overpopulation are severe. Human beings require space. An increased population results in a damaged ecosystem. Without trees to filter the air, CO2 levels increase which carries the risk to damage every single organism on the planet. Pollution effects human activity and lifestyle. 2.4 billion people do not have access to clean water subjecting them at high risk for diseases. Another is cigarette smoke. Secondhand smoke has been proven to be just as harmful as smoking cigarettes. Smoking had been banned from most public places like the workplace, restaurants and bars.

The two actions that promote our health status are sleep and exercise. My understanding of the importance of sleep and exercise as that developing good habits in both of these areas contribute to our energy levels and are both critical to our bodies ability to function, whether it is mental or physical.

Quality sleep plays an essential role in our health and wellbeing. It also serves to maintain synaptic homeostasis; it helps the brain get rid of harmful toxins (Kyle and Henry, 2017). Sleep also helps maintain alertness and plays a role in our immunological health and metabolic health (Kyle and Henry, 2017).

Exercise helps promote our health status by improving our quality of life and by helping reduce the risk of many diseases and disability (Nielsen et al., 2014).

The two factors that can cause dysfunction and result in disease include alcohol and the lack of use of condoms. Alcohol can alter a person’s mental state, they are no longer in control of their body, and it can cause poor/ dangerous choices. It can also cause damage to the liver, and excessive drinking can lead to alcohol poising or even death. As for the lack of use of condoms, the most significant risk in not using one, especially with a new partner is the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.

Lack of sleep can lead to many issues such as increased inflammation and risk of infection an altered glucose metabolism and increased weight gain (Kyle and Henry, 2017). The system that would be impacted by the disease is the endocrine system.

The lack of exercise can lead to many diseases that can affect the cardiovascular system. According to Akindutire and Olanipekun (2017) “it is widely accepted that compared to active people, inactive people tend to have higher risk of strokes and heart attacks, higher blood pressures, and higher risk of developing certain types of cancers, a higher risk of osteoporosis and higher tendency to become obese” (p. 40, para. 12).

I decided to research more about what and how human activities have an impact on our environment in regards to food quality. From what I found is that our eating patterns impact the environment and that the current food system is straining the Earth’s natural resources (Alsaffar, 2016). It also contributes to climate change. According to Alsaffar (2016), “… highly processed and packaged food increases the use of environmental resources” (p. 108, para. 3). Unfortunately, there is not enough food to feed everyone, and the environmental resources consumed are not replaceable.
