Project 2

Overview

You will pick a social institution (e.g. family, education, religion, mass media, etc…) and provide a Functionalist and a Conflict Theory analysis of your institution in American society. This project will help you practice the skills you need for writing your final paper – selecting a topic, creating an outline and creating citations.

What Do You Have to Do?

You will need to conduct research on your specific social institution with a combination of 7-10 resources (e.g., books, news articles, academic journals, legitimate internet sites, , etc.) You may NOT use Wikipedia as one of your sources. After you have conducted your research, you will analyze your information by answering the following questions:

  1. Discuss the history of your institution. How did it emerge? How did it come into existence?
  2. Who are the major participants in the institution? What are their roles and statuses?
  3. How do members of society perceive your institution?
  4. How do members of the institution perceive itself (its own institution)?
  5. How has the institution changed over time?
  6. What has caused various institutions to change?
  7. Discuss any stable features of the institution, that is, features that have not changed.
  8. As a way to better accommodate members of society, how would you improve your institution?
  9. Does your institution work better for some members of society (as opposed to others)?
  10. Apply a conflict and functionalist analysis to your institution

You will then organize and submit your information in outline format on a PowerPoint (10 – 15 pages) or other slidesharing presentation format. Make sure that you have a Turnitin score for this assignment, and that your score is less than 30%. You cannot submit an active link (like a url for Google Slides) as your assignment submission. You can save your Google Slides as a PDF to submit through canvas. Remember that slides are a visual tool. Be sure to include pictures, tables, graphs, and charts.

Housing Sociology

The place of housing is the next only food and clothing among the primary necessities of life. The housing shortage is one of the common social problems. The housing problem involves every individual and family, and the research of housing sociology plays an important role in realizing people’s basic rights, improving the quality of life, ensuring social order and safety, and promoting social and economic development.

Man is primarily a social creature and loves to live in a society or community. Hence housing does not mean a covered roof for every family. It is a social unit planned on neighborhood and community principles. Housing in a general sense is the layout and development of a residential unit in which people can live in pleasant, peaceful, and healthy surroundings with social, cultural, and recreational facilities.

The need for a home is universal. But today, housing is dominated by economic and political logic that conflict with the idea of housing for all. When residential space becomes a speculative investment or a tool for political repression, it raises fundamental questions about what, and whom, housing is for.

A good housing facility must be located and designed that they afford convenience, amenity, health and social life to be a community. A house in a general sense represents the smallest unit from where the town planning scheme emerges. The success and failure of all town planning schemes on the effective provision of housing.
