Universal Declaration of Human Rights Discussion

Introduction: People have struggled for recognition of basic human rights in countries around the world. Considering the 20th century, some of the most particularly egregious human rights violations committed by states took place in what was then the Soviet Union. The monument above memorializes those Soviet citizens who lost their lives for committing “crimes against the state,” and is not far from the site of one of the largest GULAG (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.camps in the Soviet Union (photo taken in Malinovka, Kazakhstan, the site of the ALZHIR (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., a labor camp for female political prisoners; the largest GULAG camp, the KARLAG (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., was near Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

This is your last discussion post activity for our course! After you’ve completed your discussion post responsibilities for the week, please consider working on your final paper. Note that there is only one discussion prompt this week, since the topic lends itself to a very diverse set of answers. I also expect that this should reduce the complexity of the assignment, giving you more time to work on your course papers.

Instructions: For your initial discussion post this week (due 11:59 pm (CT) Thursday, April 4), you will consider the international human rights regime, with a focus on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and on the relationships among the UN, states, and people in the context of promoting and defending a common vision of human rights around the globe.

Prior to completing your assigned discussion response activity, you should carefully complete the reading assigned this week: Chapter 11. Remember that your response should be no less than 200 words, Note that the peer response has specific guidelines for the response, described below.

  • Last Names A-Z (everyone): Begin by reading the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (also linked in the LEARN section of this week’s lesson module). Then, choose ONE of the thirty articles that speaks to a human rights issue of interest to you. Then, use a reliable news source (or use a news aggregator like Google News (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) to locate a recently published article that addresses this human rights issue. For example, if I were interested in Article 9, I would locate and discuss recent (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.articles (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.concerning the forced labor camps described in the introduction to this section of the lesson.
    • Summarize: Identify the article from the UDHR that you chose, and explain why you chose that specific article. What is it about that human rights concept that drew your interest? Then, summarize and provide a link to the news article that you found which relates to the the UDHR article you chose (2-3 sentences).
    • Evaluate: Explain how the situation, event, person/people, process, etc. described in the news article you chose illustrates or otherwise relates to the human rights concept you are considering.
    • Analyze: Does the case described in the new article that you found suggest that the human right discussed in the UDHR article you chose is universally realized? Why or why not? Does the case described in the article you chose introduce an international issue or is the issue limited to just one country?
    • Reflect: Does the article from the UDHR that you chose describe a truly universal human right? Why or why not? Should this be a universal human right?

Your discussion posts should carefully address your assigned articles and directly cite the course textbook or other course materials as appropriate, and should consist of at least 200 words. You are required to provide both in-text and reference citations in APA for all sources utilized.
